Federal Government Debt

Clint stands for ending federal deficits by cutting spending and for enacting a strong Balanced Budget Amendment to permanently balance the federal budget.

Debt is the slavery of the free. Our $12 trillion federal debt is $160,000 per American family, on top of what you owe for your mortgage, car loan, and credit cards. Our $60 trillion in unfunded federal liabilities, largely unfunded promises for future Medicare and Social Security, is $800,000 per American family. This is crushing debt, slavery to debt that you did not vote for, debt created by politicians who have lost all fiscal responsibility.

America was founded on no taxation without representation. The debt relies on taxing unrepresented generations to repay it, generations too young to vote or not yet born.

We are now funding government operating expenses with debt, borrowing $1.5 trillion per year, 40% of what we spend. Congress appropriates trillions without accountability, responsibility, or any thought of a balanced budget. The money goes for bailouts to banks and big corporations, to earmarks and subsidies, and to thousands of programs that don’t work.

Avoiding future default on the debt requires either much higher taxes or massive spending cuts. Clint will only vote to cut spending: ending bailouts, ending subsidies, ending ineffective programs, and exempting no part of the budget.

Clint will also work for a strong Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution so future generations never again face such a huge fiscal burden.
